Weekend Getaway to Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach
Join us for a quick weekend getaway up the coast to Huntington Beach. With a stay at the Hyatt Regency booked on credit card reward points, this was a low-cost option for a weekend break.
Weekend Getaway
Living near San Diego, we have access to some of the most beautiful US beaches and gorgeous weather year-round. But sometimes it is still nice to get out of our home region for a quick weekend getaway. We recently spent a weekend in Huntington Beach, California, just a short hour and twenty minute drive from us.

Huntington Beach
We started our weekend in Huntington beach with a stroll down the municipal pier. The current concrete pier, completed in 1992, extends out 1,856 feet and was constructed to withstand sizable waves (up to 31 feet) or up to a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. From atop the pier, you can watch the plentiful surfers riding the waves or have a burger at the iconic Ruby’s at the pier’s end. We opted to do a little shopping through town and grab a bite at the Huntington Beach Beer Company. This is Huntington Beach’s oldest brew pub and serves a variety of tasty craft beers. They also offer a full menu of soups, salads, pizza, burgers, sandwiches and entrees for the entire family to enjoy. Located on the second floor, this is a great spot for people watching below and catching a glimpse of the distant ocean.
A Stay at the Hyatt Regency HB
After lunch, we headed to the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach to check in. This hotel is gorgeous and just steps away from the beach! We booked our stay with points transferred from Chase to Hyatt for a free night. Although even with points, this was not a cheap hotel to book, it was still refreshing not to pay the cash price. We paid 29,000 Hyatt points for the one night we stayed in August. They do have nights available for 25,000 points and rare off-peak nights available for 21,000 points. Unfortunately, I am not a Globalist with Hyatt, so we did have to pay the steep parking rate of $54/night!

Exploring the Hotel
There are multiple pools at this hotel to enjoy, including one pool with slides for the kids. This pool was extremely crowded the day we were here, which likely fluctuates seasonally. If your kids are little, the slide pool will probably be a huge hit. My kids, however, who are a little older (11 and 14) thought the slides were not very exciting. We actually enjoyed the quietness of the lagoon-style pool a little better. Hyatt Regency HB does not allow any outside food/drinks at any of their pool areas. However, they do have poolside bar/eateries that offer light food and beverages for purchase.
The Hyatt Regency, situated across the street from the ocean, connects via a pedestrian bridge to the beach. You can request beach chairs from the front desk for lounging. There are multiple restaurants on site as well as a marketplace with snacks and sundries to purchase. The hotel gave us a $25 credit for use at the marketplace when we checked in.
We opted to walk from the hotel back towards the town of Huntington Beach for dinner, which is an easy 10-15 minute walk. Our kids were tired from being in the sun all day, so we decided on a more casual dinner option, the Bear Flag Fish Co. This is an order-at-the-counter seafood restaurant, with a variety of sushi, poke, tacos, etc. The food and drinks were delicious, and we saved just enough space for ice cream to enjoy on our walk back to the hotel.

Although it was a short stay, a getaway up the coast to Huntington Beach and a stay at the Hyatt Regency were a great way to spend the weekend. I would stay again at the Hyatt Regency, although might try to find a less busy weekend in the future.
